Motif, the software company transforming how buildings are designed, today introduced Motif Design, its flagship software platform that helps architects, engineers, and builders navigate the growing complexity of building design.

The agent-native platform combines building modeling and documentation in an open, collaborative workspace where designers and AI agents work directly on the same live project. It marks Motif’s next step toward reimagining building design software as a dynamic environment that helps architects make better-informed decisions and devote more time to the design work that shapes the quality of a building.
Buildings are being asked to do more than ever: bolder designs, higher performance standards, tougher sustainability goals, all on tighter budgets and timelines. Motif Design was built from the ground up for that reality—a single system connecting the expertise, data, and tools that sit apart today.
“A building is thousands of interconnected decisions, and today’s software fails the people making them twice over,” said Amar Hanspal, CEO and co-founder of Motif. “It reflects decisions without helping make them. And it’s so complex that the people who should be shaping the design, the principal, the project lead, the client in the room, can’t participate, so everything funnels through a few specialists while everyone else waits. We built Motif Design so the whole team can put their hands on the work: more context, and the right context when and where they need it, more capacity, and more time for the judgment that shapes great buildings.”
Open by design, the platform connects to the project data sources and tools firms already rely on. It streams live from Revit and Rhino without exporting or converting, supports IFC and other industry formats, and reaches project information wherever it lives. Because data and tools are connected, agents see the context of the live project and can act on it directly, helping teams with complex tasks such as evaluating requirements, researching options, identifying issues, and generating models, assets, and documents throughout the design process.
The judgment stays with the designer. Agents work as partners, sometimes following, sometimes leading, always accountable, with every action logged and reversible.
“The demands on architects have changed, but innovation in our tools has stagnated,” said Shane Burger, Chief Design Technology Officer at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). “Too much time is spent working around the limitations of the current generation of software instead of advancing the design itself. I’m excited by Motif’s vision for a new generation of tools that fuse AI and modeling in a collaborative environment, one where our teams spend their energy on design judgment rather than software workarounds, and deliver better buildings for our clients.”
Over time, Motif Design will incorporate a practice’s standards, preferred products, and ways of working, turning accumulated expertise into skills its agents can apply across every project. That expertise compounds and stays with the firm long after the people who developed it move on.
Motif is built on the conviction that a firm’s work belongs to the firm: no closed formats, no data held hostage, no walled garden to move into, and no training an AI agent on your company’s data for the benefit of someone else.
Teams get the core capabilities design teams expect from BIM, now in the browser: genuine parametric building elements, coordinated documentation, real-time collaboration, change history, and visualization at full project scale. It’s fast enough that the whole team, from principal to project architect to client, can work together in the model directly. The platform will continue to expand across the full arc of building design, from early ideas through construction documentation.
Motif Design complements Motif Review, which launched in 2025 as a browser-based collaborative workspace where teams can present, visualize, render, mark up, and gather feedback on models together in real time. Together, the two products create one connected system of work for designing buildings and for bringing in the people who shape them.
